Ocular Allergies

Ocular allergies encompass a range of allergic reactions that occur in the eyes in response to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold.

Our focus is on diagnosing, managing, and treating allergic conditions that affect the eyes.

Here's an overview of ocular allergies:

  • atient Evaluation & Diagnosis: Patients experiencing symptoms such as itching, redness, tearing, burning, or foreign body sensation in the eyes undergo a comprehensive eye examination to assess for ocular allergies. The evaluation includes obtaining a detailed medical history, assessing ocular surface health, and identifying potential triggers or allergens. Additional diagnostic tests, such as skin prick testing or specific IgE blood tests, may be performed to confirm allergic sensitivities.
  • Classification & Subtypes: Ocular allergies can manifest in various forms, including:
  • Seasonal Allergic Conjunctivitis (SAC): Allergic reactions occurring in response to seasonal allergens such as pollen, typically during spring or fall.
  • Perennial Allergic Conjunctivitis (PAC): Allergic reactions that persist year-round due to exposure to indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, or mold.
  • Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC): A more severe form of ocular allergy characterized by chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva, often affecting young males and associated with a history of atopy.
  • Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis (AKC): A chronic inflammatory condition affecting patients with a history of atopic dermatitis, characterized by severe itching, redness, and corneal involvement.
  • Long-term Management & Follow-up: Ocular allergies often require ongoing management and monitoring to prevent symptom recurrence and optimize treatment outcomes. Regular follow-up visits allow for assessment of treatment response, adjustment of medications, and identification of any new triggers or exacerbating factors.
  • Patient Education & Support: Educating patients about the nature of ocular allergies, the importance of compliance with treatment regimens, and strategies for minimizing exposure to allergens is crucial for optimal management. Providing information on proper eye drop administration techniques, potential side effects of medications, and strategies for managing symptoms can help empower patients to take an active role in their eye health.

By offering services for ocular allergies, our aim is to alleviate symptoms, improve ocular comfort, and enhance the quality of life for patients affected by allergic eye conditions. This comprehensive approach involves accurate diagnosis, individualized treatment planning, and ongoing support to effectively manage ocular allergies and minimize their impact on visual function and well-being.
