Uvea

Our focus is on diagnosing, managing, and treating diseases that affect the uvea, which is the middle layer of the eye comprising the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. Uveitis encompasses a group of inflammatory conditions that can cause serious complications and vision loss if left untreated.

Here's an overview of what this service entails:

  • Patient Evaluation & Diagnosis: Patients presenting with symptoms such as eye pain, redness, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or floaters undergo a comprehensive eye examination to assess for uveitis. This includes evaluating the anterior chamber (front portion of the eye), assessing the vitreous (gel-like substance in the eye), and examining the retina and optic nerve. Additional tests, such as blood tests, imaging studies (e.g., fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography), and intraocular fluid analysis, may be performed to aid in diagnosis and determine the underlying cause of uveitis.
  • Classification & Subtypes: Uveitis can be classified based on the anatomical location of inflammation (anterior, intermediate, posterior, or panuveitis) and the underlying etiology (infectious, non-infectious, autoimmune, or idiopathic). Identifying the specific subtype of uveitis is crucial for determining the most appropriate treatment approach.
  • Long-term Management & Follow-up: Uveitis is often a chronic condition requiring ongoing management and monitoring to prevent recurrences, control inflammation, and preserve vision. Regular follow-up visits are essential for assessing treatment response, monitoring for side effects, and detecting any disease progression or complications.
  • Patient Education & Support: Educating patients about the nature of uveitis, the importance of compliance with treatment regimens, and the need for regular monitoring is crucial for optimal management. Providing information on potential side effects of medications, proper administration of eye drops, and strategies for coping with visual impairment can help empower patients to actively participate in their care.

By offering uveitis services, our aim is to preserve vision, alleviate symptoms, and improve the quality of life for patients affected by this potentially sight-threatening condition. This comprehensive approach to uveitis management involves early detection, individualized treatment plans, and ongoing monitoring to optimize outcomes and minimize ocular complications.
